History

Historical Context

In March 2014, after Russia annexed Crimea, the United States and the European Union expelled roughly 60 Russian diplomats; Germany recalled its ambassador and Austria expelled three embassy staff and one OSCE officer, bringing its total expulsions since 2020 to eighteen. Austria’s latest removal of four Russian diplomats mirrors that 2014 pattern, underscoring continued Western pushback.
