History

Historical Context

During the 2016 presidential election, Donald Trump’s campaign weaponized personal insults, famously mocking Carly Fiorina’s appearance at a New Hampshire rally. The Trump campaign accepted $2.5 billion in contributions, including $1 million from billionaire Sheldon Adelson, amplifying its media-driven strategy. Similarly, in October 2026 Trump’s praise of Ohio Senator Jon Husted’s backside, amplified by Elon Musk’s $7.9 million PAC donation, mirrors the 2016 tactic of personal spectacle to shift poll numbers. Consequently, commentators like Anderson Cooper label such antics “assman-in-chief,” while the financing ensures the spectacle persists in shaping electoral outcomes.
