History

Historical Context

After the Shah’s 1979 overthrow and the 4 November seizure of the U.S. embassy—where 52 diplomats endured a 444-day hostage ordeal that spurred President Carter’s $2.5 billion rescue plan—Iranian protests and U.S. military shows have become recurring flashpoints. The recent anti-Trump effigy in Tehran’s Tajrish Square and the deployment of the carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt echo that legacy of symbolic dissent and force projection.
