History

Historical Context

In February 1988 Lynette White was murdered in Cardiff, prompting South Wales Police to charge five men and launch the longest British murder trial, later overturned for police misconduct. The case spurred extensive reviews, DNA breakthroughs in 2002, and reforms of investigative practice. Today the same force’s armed response to Clifford Foster’s alleged killing of Eleanor Barnfield echoes that legacy, emphasizing stricter evidence protocols.
