History

Historical Context

On 25 February 1994, American-Israeli settler Baruch Goldstein opened fire on worshippers at Hebron’s Ibrahimi Mosque, killing 29 Palestinians and prompting a two-week curfew on the city’s 120,000 residents. Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin condemned the act, while Hamas launched its first suicide bombings in April as retaliation. Today’s shooting of two Palestinians near Hebron revives that cycle of violence.
