History

Historical Context

India’s 2001 Tehelka sting, dubbed Operation West End, filmed defence officials taking bribes—up to INR2 lakh per person—and forced Defence Minister George Fernandes to quit. The episode established a pattern of covert recordings shaping politics. Today, Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar’s objection to a visitor wearing AI glasses has prompted rivals H D Kumaraswamy and Siddaramaiah to allege a staged sting, echoing the earlier scandal.
