History

Historical Context

In 2007 Nikon launched the D3, the first full-frame DSLR, reshaping professional photography with a 12.1-megapixel sensor and setting a new benchmark for low-light performance. The D3 retailed for roughly $5,000, outpacing Canon’s EOS-1D Mark III price of $4,800 and prompting Sony to debut its 24-megapixel full-frame sensor in 2013. Sigma’s 2026 FP2 mirrors that breakthrough by compressing a 24.5-megapixel partially-stacked sensor into a pocket-sized body, echoing Nikon’s miniaturization drive. The lineage implies ultra-compact full-frame cameras will democratize high-resolution video, pressuring rivals such as Canon, Fujifilm, and Leica to prioritize size-efficiency in forthcoming models.
