Attack on Karak Church Funeral

On Friday, unidentified gunmen arrived in a vehicle and opened fire on mourners inside the compound of a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud, Karak governorate, about 100 km south of Amman. Witnesses reported that the shooting lasted roughly five minutes before the assailants fled. Security forces were deployed to the scene and continued pursuing the suspects, according to the state-owned broadcaster Al Mamlaka TV and the Public Security Directorate.

Casualties and Victim Details

The Public Security Directorate gave two differing casualty counts. One report listed six people killed and 28 injured; another cited seven dead and 34 wounded, with 27 of the wounded receiving hospital treatment. A witness estimated that 150–200 people were present, most aged between 50 and 70. Among the deceased were three doctors, according to a member of the Halasah family.

Official Reactions

King Abdullah II labeled the incident a “terrorist attack” and pledged the “harshest retaliation,” emphasizing national unity and the value of every Jordanian life. Interior Minister Mazen Al Faraya described the perpetrators as a “group of extremists” and affirmed the government’s commitment to finding them. Maj Gen Abdallah Al Maaytah, head of the Public Security Directorate, confirmed that the search for the attackers was ongoing. The United Arab Emirates Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the violence, rejecting all forms of extremism and terrorism.

Context of Religious Minorities in Jordan

Karak hosts a minority Christian community within Jordan’s predominantly Muslim population. While Jordan is generally regarded as stable, the country has experienced heightened regional tensions following U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran earlier in the year. Attacks on Christian sites remain rare.

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

Sources differ on the exact death toll (six vs. seven) and the number of injured (28 vs. 34). No group has claimed responsibility, and authorities have not identified the attackers. Video footage released by Al Mamlaka shows three gunmen firing from a sidewalk, then retreating toward the church entrance, but further forensic details have not been disclosed.
