History

Historical Context

In 1998, the New York Yankees bolstered their World Series roster by activating right-hander Andy Pettitte despite a lingering elbow strain. Yankees manager Joe Torre announced Pettitte’s 3.00 ERA over 150 innings, while MLB recorded a 12% increase in postseason pitcher activations. The decision mirrors Milwaukee’s 2024 move to insert Brandon Woodruff on the Brewers’ World Series roster amid shoulder inflammation concerns. Both cases illustrate how teams gamble on elite arms, risking short-term health for potential championship leverage, a strategy still debated by analysts.
