Investigation and Evidence
Merseyside Police’s Online Child Abuse Investigations Team (OCAIT) began probing cross-border offending that involved a contact known only as “A.” Detectives identified “A” as Shaw and executed an emergency warrant at his Plank Lane home in Leigh on July 1. A hidden phone seized at the property contained thousands of indecent images of children—including over 3,000 Category A images—evidence of sexual assaults, and photographs of Vernon sexually assaulting a young boy. The device also held a paedophile manual with instructions for abusing children.
Charges and Penalties
Shaw admitted four sexual assaults against a female child, one against a male child, making and possessing more than 5,000 indecent images, distributing those images, and possessing the manual. He received a custodial term of nine-and-a-half years, followed by five years on extended licence.
Vernon admitted a single sexual assault on a male child and was sentenced to four-and-a-half years.
Together the couple’s sentences total 13½ years. Both will remain on the sex-offenders register for life and are subject to lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Orders.
Official Police Response
Detective Constable Danny Molyneux of OCAIT said Merseyside Police remain committed to protecting children from dangerous predators. He described the offences as horrific and noted that, while no sentence can erase the harm, the punishments aim to provide some comfort to affected families. OCAIT reiterated a zero-tolerance stance toward anyone using the internet to commit, enable, or view child sexual abuse.
Impact and Safeguarding Measures
The case highlights persistent online exploitation risks in Merseyside. Police emphasized proactive targeting and arrest of offenders and urged victims or witnesses to report abuse through police or partner agencies. Lifelong registration and sexual harm prevention orders are intended to monitor the offenders and help safeguard children from future abuse.
