Community Rallies to Raise Over $2 Million for Silver Rail Elementary Shooting Victims
By Drooid · · How we work
The Shooting and Immediate Aftermath
A gunman entered Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on a Sunday, killing 5-year-old Rhoam Summer and wounding several others, including 7-year-old Saylor Graham-Poarch, who remains in hospital care. The shooter was subsequently shot dead by Kaylub Giamanco, a man who entered the school after the attack.
Fundraising Efforts and Totals
Within days of the incident, the Oregon Community Foundation launched two campaigns—the Rapid Response Fund and the Megan Lambert Memorial Fund—and ten verified GoFundMe pages were created. As of the latest reporting, donations have exceeded $2 million. Contributions include roughly $685,000 earmarked for Saylor’s recovery, $214,000 for Rhoam’s family, and $413,500 for Giamanco’s family. Additional support is flowing through a Meal Train for the Summer family and direct donations collected by the Bend-La Pine Schools district and the Silver Rail Parent-Teacher Organization.
Verification and Distribution Mechanisms
GoFundMe officials explain that each fundraiser undergoes a technical review and employee verification to confirm that organizers are directly connected to the incident. Beneficiary personal information must be verified before any funds are released, and a transaction fee is deducted from each donation. The Meal Train platform operates similarly, requiring a bank account for the beneficiary and also applying a transaction fee.
Community and Business Participation
Local businesses have matched and supplemented donations: over 130 Dutch Bros. locations contribute $1 per drink, Kefi Fast Fresh Mediterranean donates all Friday sales, and 350 Deschutes pledges contributions through the end of the month. Arts and food venues—including the Shevlin Crossing Art Gallery, Lot Food Carts and Taproom, and Key Creative’s print sale—direct proceeds to affected families. Additional meals and match-donations have been provided by Dilly Dally Coffee, Porchlight Coffee, Jackson’s Corner, and several local delis. Breweries such as Silver Moon, GoodLife, and Cascade Lakes have hosted matching-donation events, while chef Brian Malarkey and the Dry Canyon Club in Redmond have offered further matched fundraising activities.
Ongoing Impact
The fundraising drive remains active, with new events and matching offers announced through the coming weeks. The sustained outpouring of support reflects a broad community effort to address the immediate financial needs of victims’ families and to aid the school’s recovery after the tragedy.
