History

Historical Context

The Americans with Disabilities Act, first drafted by the National Council on Disability in 1986 and signed by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990, extended civil-rights protections despite business and evangelical opposition. Its 2008 amendment broadened coverage further. Today, Donald Trump’s and JD Vance’s disability-based slurs revive the law’s ongoing fight against discrimination.
