Elon Musk’s Reported $1 Billion Stake in Skydance After Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery Merger

Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery Merger Forms Skydance

On October 6, 2026, Paramount completed its $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, ending a bidding war that also involved Netflix and a series of antitrust lawsuits. The combined entity now operates under the Skydance name and is led by co-CEOs David Ellison and Ynon Kreiz. The merger left the new company with nearly $80 billion of debt and a mandate to generate $6 billion in cost synergies over the next three years by integrating film studios, the Paramount+ and HBO Max streaming services, linear television networks, and news outlets such as CBS and CNN.

Elon Musk’s Reported $1 Billion Equity Investment

Complex cited CNBC, which referenced an unnamed source, as reporting that Elon Musk has committed roughly $1 billion to Skydance’s equity raise. Semafor first disclosed the investment on October 22, noting that the funding arrives as Skydance seeks additional equity to manage its debt load. Adgully echoed the figure, describing the capital infusion as part of a fresh equity round that also includes contributions from existing investors, including board member Laurene Powell Jobs. Neither Musk nor Skydance officials have provided a public comment.

Financial Landscape and Existing Backers

The merger’s financing was underpinned by a $40 billion equity guarantee from Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle and father of David Ellison. In 2022, Larry Ellison contributed $1 billion to Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of Twitter (now X) and served on Tesla’s board from 2018 onward. Musk’s new investment therefore deepens a multi-year financial relationship between the Musk and Ellison families.

Legal Challenges and Opposition

The consolidation has faced lawsuits from consumers, the Writers Guild of America, and a coalition of 12 states. California Attorney General Rob Bonta led the multistate opposition, arguing that the merger would diminish competition, cut jobs, and raise prices for consumers.

Outlook and Integration Goals

Skydance’s leadership aims to complete the integration of the two historic studios, merge the streaming platforms, and streamline television and news operations while achieving the projected $6 billion in savings. Musk’s reported $1 billion contribution adds another billionaire backer to a company already financed by some of the world’s wealthiest individuals and investment funds, potentially bolstering its ability to meet the ambitious cost-reduction targets.
