History

Historical Context

In 1962, Eon Productions released Dr. No, starring Sean Connery, inaugurating the James Bond film series that would span over six decades. United Artists financed the picture with a $1 million budget, and the film ultimately earned $59.6 million worldwide, a record for British spy cinema. Today, Amazon MGM Studios’ $20 million creative-control purchase and the $53,000 auction prices for Daniel Craig’s Skyfall suit mirror the franchise’s lucrative origins. Consequently, the Bond brand remains a multibillion-dollar engine for Eon Productions, prompting continual reinvention through new actors, directors, and high-value memorabilia markets.
