History

Historical Context

At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Kerri Strug vaulted on an injured ankle to secure the United States women’s team gold. USA Gymnastics reported the squad’s combined total of 197.850 points outpaced Russia by 0.150, a margin that shocked Moscow officials. In 2026, Skye Blakely, despite a 2021 elbow ligament tear and a 2024 Achilles rupture, won the World all-around in Rotterdam by .534 over Liudmila Roshchina. The pattern of injury-defying victories fuels U.S. program expansion, prompting sponsors like Nike and the Olympic Committee to allocate $15 million toward athlete health initiatives.
