History

Historical Context

After the AFL-NFL merger announced June 8 1966 and completed for the 1970 season, the ten former AFL clubs and three NFL teams (Colts, Browns, Steelers) formed the AFC, while the other 13 NFL clubs created the NFC. In 1970 the former AFL squads went 19-39 against old-line NFL teams, a gap that still echoes in today’s games, such as the Patriots’ 30-24 loss to the Bears.
