History

Historical Context

India’s anti-corruption drive gained a formal foothold when the Income Tax Department launched Swachh Dhan Abhiyan on 31 January 2017, echoing the earlier war-on-drugs-era money-laundering laws of the 1980s. The October 2026 arrest of Lucknow officer Deepak Kumar and constable Manoj Dwivedi for a INR5 lakh bribe, condemned by Uttar Pradesh leader Akhilesh Yadav, shows how the 2017 initiative continues to empower regional probes of public officials.
