The Award and Memorial Lecture

The International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS) announced that Professor Ashoke Sen, a theoretical physicist at ICTS, has been awarded the Oskar Klein Medal—one of the highest honours in theoretical physics. The medal, established in 1988, is presented each year by Stockholm University and the Nobel Committee for Physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Career Highlights and Prior Honors

Sen’s career includes a series of internationally recognised awards. He received the ICTP Prize in 1989, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1994, the Infosys Prize in Mathematical Sciences in 2009, the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics in 2012, the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2013, the Dirac Medal in 2014, and election as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1998. His contributions to string theory—particularly work on S-duality, black-hole entropy counting, and string field theory—have positioned him among the leading researchers in the field.

Significance for Indian Theoretical Physics

Sen’s receipt of the Oskar Klein Medal marks the first time an Indian scientist has earned this distinction, underscoring the growing global impact of India’s research community in fundamental physics. The award highlights the relevance of string-theoretic approaches to unifying quantum mechanics and gravity, areas in which Sen’s work has been pivotal.

ICTS Director’s Response

Rajesh Gopakumar, director of ICTS, praised Sen’s association with the institute, noting that his achievements help foster a culture of scientific excellence and inspire the next generation of Indian physicists.

About the Oskar Klein Medal

The medal honors distinguished contributions to physics and is named after Swedish theoretical physicist Oskar Klein. Notable past recipients include Nobel laureates Chen-Ning Yang, Steven Weinberg and Hans Bethe, reflecting the award’s international prestige.
