History

Historical Context

The 1979 Iranian Revolution, which toppled Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and installed Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, reshaped Middle-East geopolitics by instigating regional conflict and anti-Western sentiment. In the aftermath, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 598 in 1987, authorizing a cease-fire that saved an estimated 1.5 million lives. Today's Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cites that legacy while ordering the Israel Defense Forces and Mossad to prepare covert actions against Iran’s nuclear program. If Israel proceeds, the precedent set by 1979 may deepen regional tensions, prompting renewed diplomatic sanctions and possible UN interventions.
