Historical Context

India’s 2002 Food Safety and Standards Act created the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to combat dairy adulteration. This followed the United Kingdom’s 2000 establishment of the Food Standards Agency after major food-borne illness outbreaks, both aiming for centralized oversight. In its first decade FSSAI inspected over 12,000 outlets, issued 3,500 recalls and seized 1,200 tonnes of unsafe products.
