Summary

Bavarian State Operates

The Bavarian state owns the Kehlsteinhaus and runs it as a mountain restaurant.
The site hosts a permanent exhibition detailing its Nazi-era history.
The Berchtesgaden Mountain Experience Association says the building was intended for political representation but was of little significance.
The venue will stay open for tourists until November 8, 2026.
Since 1952 the former guest house has operated as a popular Alpine dining destination.

History

Historical Context

In 1938 Adolf Hitler inaugurated the Kehlsteinhaus, the Eagle’s Nest, atop Bavaria’s 1,834-meter Berchtesgaden ridge as a gift to senior officials. Architect Albert Speer supervised its rapid construction, completing the 12-room lodge in eight months at a cost of roughly 30 million Reichsmarks. Today, Bavarian police and the Berchtesgaden Mountain Experience Association confront a suspected arson that ignited the same structure, prompting a massive firefighting response. The blaze revives debates over preserving Nazi-era monuments and influencing future heritage policies and tourism management across Germany and international scrutiny.
