History

Historical Context

The Columbine High School massacre on April 20, 1999, left 13 dead and sparked nationwide debate over school safety. Perpetrators Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, both seniors, used two semi-automatic rifles and a shotgun, costing roughly $1.2 million in damages. Similarly, the 2026 Silver Rail Elementary shooting involved 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, a legally purchased Mossberg Maverick 88, echoing Columbine’s weapon-access controversy. Both tragedies prompted legislative proposals, such as the 2000 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and 2026 calls for stricter gun-sale checks, reshaping policy debates.
