Manfred Pushes Cap

Commissioner Rob Manfred said the Brewers' World Series run strengthens the case for a salary cap.
Manfred said he will not block owners from pursuing a cap in the next CBA.
MLBPA interim director Bruce Meyer warned a cap would limit competition and hurt sustainability.
The 2027 proposal sets a $245.3 million salary cap and a $171.2 million floor.

History

Historical Context

The 1975 Seitz decision, issued by arbitrator Peter Seitz, granted free agency to MLB players, reshaping baseball’s labor landscape. Following the ruling, Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally signed contracts averaging $1.5 million each in 1976, tripling previous salary norms. Today, the Brewers’ 2026 World Series victory and Rob Manfred’s $245.3 million salary-cap proposal revive the league’s historic tension between player earnings and parity. If adopted, the cap could curb payroll inflation, echoing the 1970s reforms that ultimately reshaped contract negotiations and revenue sharing.
