Google Messages Launches Enhanced Protection Mode

New Enhanced Protection Features
Google announced that its Messages app for Android is adding an “Enhanced Protection” mode aimed at curbing spam and scams. The upgrade introduces three core capabilities. First, Scam Detection uses cloud-based Gemini models to evaluate the context of messages from unknown senders and infer a scammer’s intent more quickly than the prior on-device system. Second, enhanced link protection relies on the on-device Gemini Nano model together with real-time web signals to judge whether an unfamiliar link is trustworthy before the user taps it. Third, the app redesigns warning dialogs to give users additional time and clearer context, encouraging them to “pause before tapping” links from numbers not in their contacts. The feature is optional and can be selected in Settings -> Protection & safety, where users choose among Enhanced protection, Standard protection, or No protection (the latter is discouraged.
How It Differs From Standard Protection
Standard Protection, which has been part of Google Messages since its launch, blocks obvious spam and “suspected harmful links” using on-device detection alone. Enhanced Protection adds cloud-based analysis for “novel and sophisticated attacks” and processes messages within Android’s Private AI Compute environment, encrypting content so that even Google cannot access it. This dual-layer approach is intended to improve detection of emerging threats while preserving user privacy.
Device Availability and Rollout Status
The feature is being rolled out with the latest Google Messages beta (version 20261020_00_RC00). At present it is available on Pixel 10+ devices, Samsung Galaxy S26 series, Z Flip 8, Z Fold 8, and other select Android phones. Google notes that the rollout is ongoing and that additional devices will receive the update as they meet the required hardware specifications.
Anticipated Impact on Spam and Scam Prevention
Google expects the combination of cloud-based Gemini analysis and on-device Gemini Nano evaluation to identify “novel and sophisticated attacks” more effectively than the previous system. The redesigned warnings aim to give users clearer cues before interacting with potentially malicious links, thereby reducing accidental clicks.
Guidance for Users
To activate Enhanced Protection, users open Google Messages, navigate to Settings -> Protection & safety, and select the desired protection level. Google recommends opting for at least Standard protection and suggests Enhanced protection for those who want the strongest safeguards against evolving spam and scam tactics.
