JetBlue Confronts Financial Pressure with Restructuring Advisors and a New Premium Strategy
By Drooid · · How we work
Core Event: Creditors Engage Restructuring Advisors
A coalition of JetBlue’s senior creditors, including holders of the airline’s $2 billion 2031 bonds and a $742 million first-lien loan, has hired financial adviser PJT Partners and law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld. Reported by the Wall Street Journal, the move follows a sharp decline in JetBlue’s share price to $2.65, its lowest level since the 2002 IPO, and a surge in short interest to more than 30 % of float. While the appointment does not signal imminent bankruptcy, it underscores mounting concerns about the carrier’s ability to service its debt while pursuing profitability.
Background & Context: Strained Finances and Rising Costs
JetBlue entered 2024 with a $247 million net loss in Q2 despite a 14.5 % year-on-year revenue increase to $2.7 billion. By June 30, the airline carried $8.5 billion in debt and finance-lease obligations, and S&P Global Ratings downgraded the carrier, citing pressure from higher fuel prices. Jet fuel costs rose 76 % to $4.23 per gallon in Q2, and U.S. jet fuel prices have nearly doubled since late February. The carrier’s cash burn and a projected $2.5 billion additional fuel expense for 2026 have heightened scrutiny ahead of its third-quarter earnings call scheduled for October 27.
Strategic Initiatives: BlueFirst Cabin and Loyalty Overhaul
New Domestic First-Class Cabin
JetBlue is launching “BlueFirst,” a domestic first-class product on aircraft without the Mint business-class cabin. The first service is slated for December 8, 2026, on the Boston-Fort Lauderdale route, with bookings opened for more than 30 routes. BlueFirst seats feature wider recliners, complimentary meals, premium snacks and drinks, and Bluetooth-enabled seat-back screens.
Loyalty Program Expansion
Effective February 1, 2027, JetBlue’s TrueBlue program will grant every Mosaic elite tier (Mosaic 1-4) space-available upgrades to BlueFirst, extending the benefit to one companion per reservation. JetBlue Premier Cardholders can also qualify when the card is used for purchase. Main, Main Flex, EvenMore, and EvenMore Flex fares are eligible; Main Base and EvenMore Base fares are excluded. Upgrades will clear automatically 60 minutes before departure, with priority given to higher Mosaic tiers, card-paying travelers, and those holding eligible EvenMore fares.
Upgrade Certificates
The carrier is rebranding its “Move to Mint” certificates as “Premium Upgrade Certificates,” usable for either Mint or BlueFirst seats. Mosaic 2 members may select one certificate through the “Perks You Pick” program, while Mosaic 3 and 4 members continue to receive four certificates automatically, with additional certificates earned for every 100 Tiles beyond the Mosaic 4 threshold.
