OpenAI Pursues $30 B Fundraising Round Valued Over $1 Trillion Ahead of Delayed IPO

Massive Fundraise Targets Trillion-Dollar Valuation

OpenAI is in the final stages of a fundraising round that could bring in as much as $30 billion, pushing the company’s implied valuation to roughly $1.25 trillion. The round includes tech-investment firm Coatue and a group of investors from the United Arab Emirates, though many participants remain unnamed. The capital is described as an “opportunistic” bridge while the firm weighs options for a public listing.

IPO Timing Remains Uncertain

OpenAI filed confidential paperwork with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in August, signaling an intention to go public, but executives have not confirmed a specific timeline. In a recent interview, CEO Sam Altman said that the current environment makes an IPO “an ill-advised moment.” CFO Sarah Friar later indicated that a public offering is likely to occur sometime in 2027, suggesting a deliberate postponement beyond the originally expected 2026 window.

Investor Pressure and Political Context

Wall Street investors are reportedly urging both OpenAI and rival Anthropic to accelerate their IPO plans, fearing that a Democratic victory in the upcoming midterm elections could lead to tighter regulation of the AI sector. Anthropic, the maker of the Claude model, is eyeing a mid-November IPO that could value it between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion.

Industry Landscape and Comparable Deals

The fundraising effort unfolds amid heightened competition among AI firms. Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which includes his artificial-intelligence lab xAI, completed a record-setting IPO in June and Musk has floated the idea of merging SpaceX with Tesla, a move that could create a $3.5 trillion conglomerate. These developments underscore the broader scramble for capital and market positioning as AI companies prepare for potential public market scrutiny.
