Settlement Overview
On October 23, the Archdiocese of New York and plaintiffs’ lawyers announced they were close to a settlement that would pay more than US $800 million to 1,300 claimants who said they were abused by clergy or lay leaders. The agreement would require every plaintiff to accept the deal, offering each a minimum lump-sum of US $250,000 with the possibility of a larger amount after a detailed review of each abuse claim.
Background and Recent Church Settlements
The proposed deal follows a wave of large payouts by U.S. Catholic jurisdictions. In June, the Archdiocese of San Francisco agreed to US $395 million for over 530 claimants, and in 2024 the Archdiocese of Los Angeles settled for more than US $1 billion, one of the largest church settlements on record.
