Indonesia’s Haze Sparks Nationwide Student Protests

By Drooid · · How we work

Escalating Demonstrations Across the Archipelago

Protests began on Monday and quickly spread to more than half a dozen cities, including Jakarta and Palangkaraya on the island of Borneo. Students and civil-society groups gathered under an orange sky, demanding that President Prabowo Subianto declare a national emergency and halt the agricultural practices blamed for the fires.

Scale of the Fires and Regional Impact

According to the deforestation monitor Nusantara Atlas, wildfires have burned over 1.9 million hectares in the nine months to September—a figure the Indonesian government has neither confirmed nor denied. The resulting haze has sickened hundreds of thousands of Indonesians and drifted into Malaysia, Singapore and East Timor. On October 22, schoolchildren in Java prayed for rain as the smoke continued to blanket the region.

Government Response and Official Position

President Subianto’s administration has defended its actions, stating that response efforts are ongoing but have not yet succeeded in extinguishing the blazes. Officials have not announced a national emergency, and they have not validated the 1.9 million-hectare estimate provided by Nusantara Atlas.

Criticism from Protesters and Civil Society

Law student Naomi Artika of the University of Palangka Raya described the situation as “completely, utterly abnormal” and asserted a right to breathe clean air. Protest leader Yuyun Sanjaya called provincial officials “morons” and urged the Central Kalimantan government to formally acknowledge its inability to mitigate the disaster, arguing that the haze endangers the elderly and newborns.

Outlook and Potential Actions

Diplomatic objections from neighboring countries have added pressure, while anti-government sentiment grows at home. No specific timeline for declaring a national emergency has been announced, leaving protesters and health officials uncertain about when decisive measures will be taken.
