History

Historical Context

Indira Gandhi’s 1975-1977 Emergency suspended civil liberties and jailed over 100,000 opponents. Decades later, Jamia Millia Islamia student Ebin Basil began a hunger strike in October 2026, reviving the demand for campus autonomy that was crushed during the Emergency. Parliament now faces calls to protect fundamental university freedoms in India again.
