Historical Context

After a 1998 petition forced the Knesset to adopt the Tal Law in 2002, Israel’s Supreme Court struck it down in February 2012, noting only about 30,000 of 150,000 eligible Haredi had served. Renewed court orders in 2024 removed blanket exemptions, and the September 2026 ruling that ends the July 2026 draft-freeze follows that same legal trajectory, pitting the court against Shas and United Torah Judaism.
