iPhone Duo’s “Rest Finger to Open” Feature Skips the Swipe-Up Step

By Drooid · · How we work

How the Setting Works

The iPhone Duo relies on a side-button Touch ID sensor rather than Face ID. By default, users must place a registered finger on the sensor to unlock the device and then swipe upward from the bottom of the Lock Screen to reach the Home screen. Activating the “Rest Finger to Open” option removes the swipe-up requirement: once the fingerprint is recognized while the screen is already awake, the phone opens immediately, allowing the user to keep their finger on the side button and proceed straight to the Home screen.

Where to Find the Toggle

The toggle for this behavior appears in two places within the Settings app:

1. Settings -> Touch ID & Passcode – accessing this path requires entering the device passcode before the toggle becomes visible.

2. Settings -> Accessibility -> Side Button – this location provides the same option without the additional passcode prompt.

Both entries control the identical setting, so enabling it in either location activates the feature system-wide.

Apple’s Description of the Option

This phrasing confirms that the feature’s purpose is to replace the manual swipe with a simple finger-rest gesture.

Turning the Feature Off

If users prefer the traditional two-step unlock, they can toggle the setting off again. Once disabled, the device returns to the standard flow: after a successful fingerprint scan, a swipe upward from the bottom of the Lock Screen is required to fully access the iPhone Duo.

Impact on User Experience

The “Rest Finger to Open” option streamlines the unlocking process, reducing the number of interactions needed to reach the Home screen. For users who value speed and minimal hand movement, the feature offers a noticeable convenience, while still preserving the security of Touch ID authentication.
