History

Historical Context

The 1995 Glasgow Ice Cream Wars, a turf battle between rival street gangs, erupted in February and left two civilians dead. Strathclyde Police recorded 1,200 illegal ice-cream van registrations, seized £250,000 in cash, confiscated 15 firearms, and seized 30 kilograms of drugs during the crackdown. Today, Police Scotland’s Operation Portaledge in Edinburgh and Glasgow mirrors that crackdown, arresting 82 suspects while Detective Inspector Dougal Begg investigates a reckless bar shooting. These parallels underscore persistent gang-related violence, prompting legislators to consider stricter anti-gang statutes and expanded community-watch funding for safer neighborhoods.
