Apple iPhone Duo’s Durability Tested: Scratch, Dust, and Bend Results

Launch and Market Context
Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, entered stores at a price near $2,000. The launch generated long lines of eager buyers and positioned the device as a premium competitor in the emerging foldable market.
Zach Nelson’s Hands-On Durability Evaluation
Tech reviewer Zach Nelson of JerryRigEverything posted a nearly 15-minute video in which he put the Duo through a series of scratch, dust, and bend tests. He found the outer cover screen, protected by Ceramic Shield 2 glass, to be highly resistant to scratches. By contrast, the inner 7.6-inch display, finished with a nano-textured matte coating, scratched as readily as the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s non-matte folding screen.
Nelson pressed medieval-style chainmail, dirt, dust, and pebbles against the hinge; the phone endured the chainmail without visible damage, a result he linked to the matte inner surface that helps conceal imperfections. When he attempted to bend the device backward, the frame flexed and cracks appeared on the main screen, indicating that pressure on an open device can compromise the display.

User Guidance
CNET senior technology reporter Abrar Al-Heeti advises owners to use a protective case and enroll in AppleCare, warning that repair costs are likely to be substantial. Consumers should avoid placing the Duo on a chair or couch with the inner screen open, and certainly should not sit on the device, as pressure can lead to screen damage.
