History

Historical Context

Everton’s 100th Premier League red card in March 2021, Arsenal’s in May 2022 and Chelsea’s latest dismissal mark a rise in disciplinary actions, reflected in a 12 % increase in dismissals that season. The trend mirrors the league’s historically volatile fixtures, notably the Merseyside derby which holds the record of 23 red cards—the most of any Premier League matchup—prompting the FA to consider stricter officiating guidelines.
