The rally unfolded as France faced nationwide protests sparked by high-school students, marked by looting and over 2,000 arrests.

History

Historical Context

On 21 April 2002 France held a presidential first round with sixteen candidates; far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen finished second, forcing a 5 May runoff that Jacques Chirac won with over 82 % after massive anti-Le Pen protests of up to 500,000 people. The shock shaped the National Front’s strategy, a legacy Marine Le Pen invoked in her 2026 Orléans launch.
