History

Historical Context

Veronica Guerin, an Irish journalist exposing drug kingpin John Gilligan, was shot dead on 26 June 1996. Within a week the Oireachtas passed the Proceeds of Crime Act 1996 and created the Criminal Assets Bureau, leading to over 214 arrests and seizures of drugs, guns and cash. The legacy of those reforms frames today’s Waterford arson probe, where Gardaí balance swift prosecution with evidential standards.
