History

Historical Context

In July 1994 the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 940, letting the United States lead a multinational force that landed 20,000 troops in Haiti on 19 September to restore President Jean-Bertrand Aristide after the 1991 coup. That precedent guides today’s response as President Nayib Bukele dispatches about 200 Salvadoran special-forces soldiers to Haiti to rescue four kidnapped technicians.
