History

Historical Context

The 28 April 1996 Port Arthur massacre, in which Martin Bryant killed 35 people, prompted the Howard government to enact the National Firearms Agreement, imposing strict limits on semi-automatic rifles and launching a buy-back. Those reforms reshaped Australian gun policy, yet a drive-by shooting at Fitzy’s Hotel in Loganholme this week, injuring a 19-year-old and three others, shows lingering challenges for Queensland authorities.
