History

Historical Context

After the NCAA suspended eight University of Miami football players in August 2011 for accepting illegal benefits—a scandal that led to a $2 million booster payout and later 2013 sanctions—the program’s penalties became a benchmark for college-football gambling cases. Texas Tech now faces a similar betting probe, and officials warn the Big 12 could encounter legal challenges from Attorney General Ken Paxton.
