History

Historical Context

When MLS began in 1996, D.C. United’s 55-point regular-season lead earned the inaugural Supporters’ Shield and a spot in the 1997 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup—a berth the league formalized for Shield winners in 2006. Decades later, Nashville SC captured the 2026 Shield and Forge FC won the 2023 Voyageurs Cup, both securing automatic entries for the 2027 Champions Cup.
