History

Historical Context

On 31 August 1995 chief minister Beant Singh was killed in a Chandigarh car bomb, a suicide attack claimed by Babbar Khalsa International and linked to the Khalistan Commando Force that also killed 17 others. The blast spurred a massive security response and later prosecutions, such as Balwant Singh Rajoana’s 2012 death-sentence, shaping today’s heightened vigilance against Punjab’s renewed targeted killings.
