After Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon led to the Sabra-Shatila massacre, the Kahan Commission—chaired by Supreme Court President Yitzhak Kahan—issued its February 1983 report, finding Defense Minister Ariel Sharon personally responsible and prompting his resignation. The inquiry held the IDF indirectly liable for the killing of roughly 1,300–3,500 civilians. Today’s Tel Aviv demonstrators invoke that precedent to demand a new independent commission.
