Historical Context

In 1993 India and Japan launched the Yamuna Action Plan, a bilateral river-restoration effort funded by a JBIC soft loan of 17.773 billion yen (about 700 crore rupees). The plan spurred later Delhi projects, including a 1,800-crore interceptor-sewer scheme in 2009 and the 2025 Yamuna Master Plan, and now Amit Shah’s Rs 8,941.22 crore “Chalo Yamuna” program seeks to sewer-connect every household by 2029.
