History

Historical Context

During the 1991 Gulf War, Iraq launched 39 Scud missiles at Saudi Arabia, prompting a multinational defense response. The attacks struck Riyadh and Dhahran, killing 3 civilians, injuring 30, and spiking global oil prices by roughly 5 % to $20 per barrel. Today, Iranian-backed drones and ballistic missiles similarly target Riyadh, Mecca, and Dammam, prompting U.S. State Department evacuations and Brent crude climbing to $113 per barrel. These recurring assaults underscore the region’s vulnerability, compelling Gulf states to expand air-defense systems and sustain heightened diplomatic security protocols.
