History

Historical Context

After a wave of overspending that left Premier League clubs collectively owing £3.3 billion by the 2008-09 season, UEFA introduced Financial Fair Play in 2009 and the Premier League adopted profit-and-sustainability rules for 2011-12. Those controls now underpin investigations such as the current Premier League probe of Manchester City and ongoing disciplinary actions against Chelsea.
