Suspect Linked to Two Recent Freeway Shootings Near St. Louis

Fatal Freeway Shooting and Possible Link to Earlier Attack

In mid-October, 17-year-old Alyssa Wilson was shot while driving to a St. Louis Zoo Halloween event. She was struck on Interstate 170, rushed to Barnes-Jewish Hospital and pronounced dead. Federal investigators later identified a spent shell casing at the scene that matches a casing recovered from a separate freeway shooting three days earlier in St. Louis proper, where a vehicle was hit but no injuries were reported. The federal complaint alleges that both casings were manufactured by the same company, suggesting a possible connection between the two incidents.

Investigation Findings

Security-camera footage captured a white Buick Enclave stopping on the shoulder of the southbound freeway, with a passenger exiting, pacing, and opening fire on Wilson’s vehicle. The same footage provided a license-plate number and an Arkansas Razorbacks sticker, which led detectives to a Days Inn in Caseyville, Illinois, where the vehicle was located on the days following the attack. A search of the Herndons’ hotel room uncovered an American Built Custom Rifle Company AR-15 loaded with MaxxTech 23 7.62×39 ammunition—the exact type of ammunition matched to the casings from both shootings. Handwritten notebooks found in the room contained license-plate numbers, vehicle descriptions, and notes about law-enforcement personnel the suspect believed were following him.

Legal Proceedings

Willie Herndon, 42, of Arlington, Texas, is charged federally with being a felon in possession of a firearm and faces state charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. He is scheduled for a pre-trial detention hearing on a Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois and a preliminary hearing in early November. His wife, Taiya Herndon, who allegedly drove the pair to the Illinois hotel, faces a state charge of hindering prosecution; her bail is set at $500,000, with a hearing on Thursday and a preliminary hearing slated for mid-November.

Key Individuals

  • Willie Herndon – Suspect; alleged shooter; prior felony convictions in Los Angeles.
  • Taiya Herndon – Wife; alleged driver of the white Buick Enclave; charged with hindering prosecution.
  • Robert Hickman – Father of Alyssa Wilson; described the killing as “senseless.”

Broader Implications

The case underscores challenges in linking separate roadway attacks through ballistic evidence and highlights law-enforcement reliance on video surveillance and forensic analysis. If the ballistic link is confirmed, prosecutors may pursue additional charges related to the earlier shooting, potentially expanding the scope of the investigation beyond a single homicide.
