History

Historical Context

When the Women's National Basketball Association launched in 1996, its inaugural 1997 season featured eight teams, notably the New York Liberty and Houston Comets. The league secured a $12 million television contract with NBC, and the first championship drew a 1.2 million-viewer audience, surpassing initial projections. Similarly, the 2026 WNBA Finals at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena saw the Golden State Valkyries defeat the Dream, while the franchise now negotiates new home-court venues. The early struggle for stable venues foreshadows today’s arena-sharing debates, urging the league and cities to prioritize dedicated facilities for sustained growth.
