Summary

NMIA Expands Capacity

The Terminal 1 redevelopment will raise NMIA’s capacity from 15 million to 20 million passengers annually.
Phase 1 will relocate about 5 million passengers to Navi Mumbai Airport, creating headroom for upgrades.
Around 3.6 million passengers—70 % of targeted traffic—are slated for transfer in the initial relocation stage.
Three new CIDCO bridges (SBR-9, BR-4, BR-5) will connect NMIA with major road corridors.
The terminal will feature Digi Yatra, automated baggage handling and digital processing to streamline flow.

History

Historical Context

After the 26-11 Mumbai attacks of November 2008, which killed 175 people and spurred the creation of Force One and the National Investigation Agency, the Airports Authority of India invested INR1.2 billion in 2009 to upgrade security at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Today IndiGo and Air India Express are shifting thousands of flights to the new 20-million-passenger Navi Mumbai International Airport to ease congestion.
