Barnham Village Moves Toward Symbolic Secession Over Asylum-Seeker Housing

By Drooid · · How we work

Context of the Proposed Asylum-Seeker Sites

The UK government has identified former Ministry of Defence (MoD) locations as “self-contained” sites for processing asylum seekers, shifting away from hotel accommodation. RAF Barnham in Suffolk was named in June as one of three potential bases, with the Home Office later saying the capacity would be reduced from 1,250 to about 930 migrants. According to the Home Office, most of those accommodated would be single young men who arrived in the United Kingdom illegally. Similar proposals exist for MoD Linton-on-Ouse (North Yorkshire) and extensions of existing sites at Crowborough (East Sussex) and Wethersfield (Essex).

Local Reaction and the Push for a Referendum

Barnham, a village of roughly 600 residents, convened a meeting at the village hall on a Saturday. Only seven of the 80 attendees voted against holding a symbolic referendum on leaving the United Kingdom, a move intended to highlight opposition to the government’s lack of local consultation. A working group is set to meet on the following Monday to draft a timetable for the vote.

Official Statements and Government Position

Home Office minister Anna Turley defended the policy, describing the sites as “self-contained,” more manageable and affordable than hotel accommodation. She argued that poorer areas had already taken their “fair share” of migrants and emphasized that those housed at former bases would remain on-site, with all needs provided there. The Home Office later reiterated, “We recognise the strength of feeling in local communities and are listening carefully to the concerns being raised.”

Numbers Illustrating Community Opposition

  • Piddington, Oxfordshire, held an unofficial referendum in September; 285 villagers backed “independence” with a turnout of nearly 92 percent, while 26 voted against the motion and one ballot was spoiled.
  • At Barnham’s recent meeting, seven of 80 participants opposed the referendum plan.
