History

Historical Context

On 8 November 2016 Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation of INR500 and INR1,000 notes, prompting a sharp rise in digital payments and a 150% jump in online transactions the following year. About 99.3% of the INR15.3 trillion demonetised cash returned to banks, but the move cemented a push toward a cash-less economy. The new RBI data-centre and cybersecurity institute in Bhubaneswar aim to protect the digital-payment infrastructure.
